TradeDoubler are not some little startup. They don't have any excuse for bad communication, yet they still send out totally meaningless emails to their publishers:
First the subject line:
"Apple ? Important Status Update"
So is it "Apple" or something else?
"Dear XXXXX,
With reference to your participation in the Apple Store Affiliate program through TradeDoubler. We have noticed that your site has not been active on the Apple Affiliate program indicating that you are no longer interested in the program. We will therefore be de-activating your account as of 13th October 2009. If you are still interested in being part of the Apple Affiliate program, please re-apply to join the program at any time.
If you have any questions or need any assistance, please contact your local TradeDoubler Team: xxxxxxxxxxxx at xxxxxxxx@tradedoubler.com
We thank you for your contribution and we wish you the best for your future endeavors.

There are several serious issues with this email
They also sent out another email regarding Apple which again is badly worded and totally misleading.
"Dear publisher of the Apple Online Store Affiliation Program,
From today all publishers of the Apple Online Store Affiliation Program are required to respect the Guidelines for Apple Online Store Affiliate Publishers.
These Guidelines can be reviewed at:

Please note that TradeDoubler will monitor the respect of these Guidelines by the publishers of the Apple Online Store Affiliation Program and failure to respect these Guidelines may result in the termination of your affiliation with the Apple Online Store Affiliation Program.
If you have any questions please contact your local Tradedoubler account manager xxx xxxx at xxxxx@tradedoubler.com
Thank you for your partnership,

"
Why isn't it addressed to me? It's not as if they can't manage that ...
The subject line refers to "branding":
Apple IE: Affiliate Brand Guidelines
Branding is not exactly a subject that is going to have me rushing to open my email, yet, again, TradeDoubler are actually talking about something completely different and much more important than mere guidelines.
Look at the body of the email - note the "charming" threats ...
Now look at the PDFs ...
They aren't just about Apple / Tradedoubler expressing some preferences for how publishers place banners. They are, however, very clear rules on how publishers are meant to do things.
Tradedoubler - you really need to work on your communication. Seriously. Get your act together.

There are several serious issues with this email
- Which site does it refer to?
- How can TD claim to know what I am interested in or not?
- Why are they using US spelling?
- Which part of my account are they deactivating?
- Why was the subject line of the email so weird?

I posted on my personal blog a couple of days ago about the new Screenclick site.
One of Screenclick's affiliates also posted on his blog about the site redesign and has now found that his account has been suspended!
Is this how most companies handle feedback from their affiliates???

The affiliate marketing world has gained yet another service in the last few weeks with the launch of SkimLinks.
In simple terms the idea behind Skimlinks is that it does all the "heavy lifting" for you ie. creating the precious deeplinks that are more likely to convert. If you're going to link to an advertiser you're more likely to get a return on a deeplink than you are on a simple homepage link ie. linking to a product is better than linking to the advertiser's main site.
So how does it work?
The guys in Skimlinks have created a short video to show the system in action:
skimlinks.com :: How it works? from Ciaran Rooney on Vimeo.
Aimed at blogs, forums, web applications, and content sites that want a hassle-free way to earn money from affiliate marketing, Skimlinks turns normal product links into affiliate links, with no intervention required by the publisher. That sounds wonderful, but what exactly does that mean?

The last few shopping days are now pretty much upon us with most of the online vendors urging people to place their pre-Christmas orders now.
So if you are playing catchup then maybe you should really be working on the post-Christmas sales instead.
Most of the bigger online vendors will start offering discounts almost immediately after Christmas.
Netklix are actively seeking both publishers and advertisers.
It's nice to see that there is a growing number of affiliate networks taking an active interest in the Irish market.
If you've already started using the system why not leave a comment?

Damien has put together a simple list of ways to make money from your blog, both directly and indirectly.
While he covers the more obvious ways, such as affiliate networks, adsense and selling ads directly (I'd chuck sponsorship in there as well), he also goes on to cover some of the book deals people have made, as well as the Irish blogs that have actually been sold to larger networks / media ventures.

They've now gone live in the Irish market, so I suspect we'll start seeing their ad spaces appearing on blogs and sites in the coming weeks.
It will be interesting to see who is using the platform for advertising

Amazon UK's DVD rental business has been taken over by a 3rd party (LoveFilm), so the DVD rental referrals will no longer be part of the affiliate program as of today, May 20th 2008.
It's not everyday that a merchant announces a significant increase in their payout levels, however IWOOT's latest announcement does just that.In what could best be described as a bold move the UK gadget shop emailed their affiliates earlier today to announce that they intended to take on their competition headon by increasing commissions across the board to an impressive 13% flat rate. Amazon, which was one of the first companies to offer an affiliate solution, for example, offers a flat rate of 4% or scaling commission system with an upper limit of 8.5%.
The new commission structure comes into play on April 1st.
Ebay have announced that they are taking their affiliate marketing inhouse.
To date the online auction giant had been using Commission Junction and ValueClick to handle their affiliate partner network.
According to the announcement the new network, which is aptly labelled the eBay Partner Network, will go live on April 1st. While the choice of date may lead to some sniggers, the announcement sounds promising:

While CJ and ValueClick have been valuable partners to eBay throughout the years, we've decided to give our affiliate community a customized experience for eBay affiliates.Unfortunately there is no affiliate network or plans to have one to cater for eBay Ireland users.
All the great tools and benefits of working with the eBay program will remain the same - access to the Editor Kit and affiliate API, the flexible destination tool, the great payout structure. In addition, the eBay partner network will provide several new features:
• Easy global registration to multiple countries simultaneously
• New, targeted banners and rich media creatives
• New landing page optimization and geo-targeting capabilities
• More detailed reporting capabilities for eBay's programs
The eBay Partner Network and Commission Junction will run in parallel for one month through this process, so please plan to complete your migration by May 1st, 2008.
You can receive an additional 5% bonus for all traffic tracked through eBay Partner Network in April 2008 (bonus applicable to traffic sent to Half.com and US, UK, Australia, Canada, Italy, India and Spain eBay sites). The sooner you migrate, the more you'll earn! Just:
• Register with eBay Partner Network on April 1, 2008
• Confirm your registration, and obtain your new identifiers
• Update your links with your new identifiers.

If you are setup for payment by EFT (wire transfer) it may already be in your bank account.

If your site attracts a young demographic with a sense of humour, then maybe some of the tshirts from the likes of TShirt Hell might go down well.
One of the guys in our office loves their tshirts and seems to have one for every day of the week. Before long he'd got the rest of us hooked too, so I thought I'd take a look at their affiliate program.
The T Shirt Hell affiliate program is tiered, so you can make income from people you refer to it. If your site attracts other webmasters and bloggers then this might be a winner for you.
One of my personal favourites is this shirt (image above), but other ones may be a little risque if you're trying to run a "family" site.
Since they relaunched their site a few months ago they also expanded and improved the tools available to affiliates, so now you can easily create links to their latest "releases", specials and popular items. Needless to say their system also allows you to link to ANY page on their site and make full use (and abuse) of their images.
I'd love to hear from people who have been successful with their program.
